Fresh Crisis Hits Lagos Universities As ASUU Shuts LASU, LASUED, LASUSTECH

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike across three Lagos State-owned universities following the expiration of an ultimatum issued to the state government over unresolved demands.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

The union and the Joint Campus Group of the Lagos State-owned universities announced the industrial action on Tuesday, saying the decision followed the failure of the Lagos State Government to satisfactorily address its demands.

ASUU said a 14-day ultimatum issued to the state government expired on August 31 without a satisfactory resolution or a concrete plan for addressing the issues raised by the union.

The union, in a statement signed by officials representing the three institutions, also alleged that the state government failed to commence discussions with its representatives before another deadline expired on September 13.

According to the union, one of its major demands is the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement across the three Lagos State-owned universities.

ASUU said the agreement covers the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance as well as other welfare packages for serving and retired academic staff.

The union stated that the strike would continue until the government engages meaningfully with its representatives and reaches a satisfactory resolution on the outstanding issues. It also said the industrial action had the backing of its national leadership.

ASUU appealed to students and parents to remain calm and law-abiding while the strike continues.

Meanwhile, developments involving ASUU have also emerged in Taraba State, where the union’s branch at Taraba State University, Jalingo, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government over the non-implementation of some provisions of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.

The university’s ASUU branch warned that it could take lawful measures to protect the interests of its members if the government failed to address the outstanding issues before the expiration of the ultimatum.

The notice, signed by the branch Chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, was issued in Jalingo on Tuesday. The union said several provisions of the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement remained outstanding at the institution and required urgent attention.

The final 14-day notice is scheduled to run from September 14 to September 28, 2026.

In Plateau State, however, ASUU has suspended its strike at Plateau State University after reaching an agreement with the Plateau State Government on six demands presented by the union.

The decision followed an emergency congress meeting held in Jos on Tuesday to review the issues that led to the strike declared on August 26, 2026.

In a statement signed by the branch Chairperson, Dr Vincent D. Choji, and Secretary, Dr Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, the union said the suspension followed an agreement reached between the negotiation teams representing the state government and the union.

Following the review of the agreement, the congress resolved that the strike be suspended from midnight on September 16, with members directed to resume academic activities.
