Eight-Goal Thriller! Man City Survive Sunderland Scare To Storm Top Of Premier League

Manchester City produced a dramatic performance to overcome Sunderland 5-3 in an eight-goal Premier League thriller, maintaining their perfect start to the campaign and moving three points clear at the top of the table.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the champions were twice pegged back by a spirited Sunderland side before Erling Haaland eventually put the result beyond doubt with a late goal.

Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring after just nine minutes, marking his first goal for City since his move from Chelsea with a well-executed free-kick that curled into the near post.

Sunderland responded quickly, with Enzo Le Fée threading an excellent pass through the City defence for Brian Brobbey, who calmly finished beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma to level the contest.

City regained the lead after Sunderland were caught attempting to build from the back. The loose ball eventually fell to Rayan Cherki, who kept his composure to fire a low effort into the corner.

The visitors refused to back down, however, and were rewarded with another equaliser. Le Fée again played a key role, splitting the City defence before finding Thomas Meunier, who squared the ball for Brobbey to tap home. A lengthy VAR check eventually confirmed the goal.

City restored their advantage shortly before half-time when Antoine Semenyo unleashed a powerful finish after Sunderland failed to properly clear a cross. Haaland then missed an opportunity to extend the lead before the interval when he fired wide with a clear sight of goal.

The Norwegian striker was not to be denied for long, although it was Semenyo who added City’s fourth goal after the restart. Semenyo collected a pass intended for Haaland before cutting inside and drilling a left-footed effort into the far corner.

Sunderland responded almost immediately. Granit Xhaka found Nilson Angulo, who delivered the ball across the face of goal for Brobbey to bundle it home and complete his first senior hat-trick, bringing the visitors back within touching distance.

The Black Cats continued to threaten an equaliser, with Donnarumma nearly allowing them back into the contest after failing to claim a high ball. Ruben Dias reacted quickly to clear the danger off the line.

City finally put the game beyond Sunderland nine minutes from time. Josko Gvardiol delivered a cross towards the back post, where Haaland slid in to convert. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR overturned the decision after confirming the run was legal.

The victory keeps Manchester City’s perfect league record intact and sends them into the international break at the top of the Premier League, while Sunderland were left to reflect on a spirited display that ultimately ended without reward.
