Anyim Breaks Silence On PDP Exit, Explains Why He Joined APC
Former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, has explained his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying his political experience convinced him that the South-East would need alliances with other regions to achieve its presidential aspirations.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Anyim made the remarks during an interview with Arise News while discussing his political journey and the considerations that influenced his decision to join the ruling party.
The former Senate President said his experience in previous political processes showed him that no individual from the South-East could successfully pursue the presidency without building meaningful political relationships beyond the region.
Anyim argued that support from other geopolitical zones would be necessary for anyone from the South-East seeking to become president, stressing that the region could not achieve the objective in isolation.
He explained that his assessment of the political landscape led him to conclude that the APC was better positioned to serve what he described as that broader political interest, prompting his decision to join the party.
Anyim also shared his position on the rotation of the presidency among Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. He said, in his view, President Bola Tinubu should be allowed to complete a second term before power moves to another region.
According to him, the political sequence he envisages would see power move from the South-West to the North after Tinubu’s tenure before eventually returning to the South-East.
Anyim maintained that political cooperation among regions was essential, arguing that one region must support others in order to receive reciprocal support when its own turn comes.
He said the South-East should therefore build alliances with other parts of the country rather than attempt to pursue the presidency independently.
Anyim’s comments come amid intensified political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the former Senate President having taken on a role in the APC’s political mobilisation efforts in the South-East.
