Peter Obi Raises Alarm Over Safety, Says He May Not Be Alive By 2027 Election

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern about his safety ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he is uncertain whether he will be alive when Nigerians go to the polls.

Obi made the disclosure during an appearance on Arise TV on Thursday, where he spoke about the political atmosphere ahead of the election and called for a peaceful and democratic process. His comments were also reported by multiple Nigerian news outlets following the interview.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the former Anambra State governor said he had been subjected to petitions and investigations in different places, adding that he remained uncertain about what could happen to him before the election.

“As I speak to you, I have also petitioned; I’ve been investigated everywhere. I still hear that I’m not even sure whether I’ll still be alive at the end of this,” Obi said.

He said he was relying on God for protection because he was unsure of what was unfolding around him.

“I’m praying to God for His protection because at this stage, I’m not sure what is happening,” he added.

Obi also appealed to state governors to provide a conducive environment for all presidential candidates and other political contestants to campaign freely ahead of the 2027 elections.

He acknowledged that governors had the right to support candidates of their choice but urged them to also allow other political parties and candidates to operate without unnecessary restrictions.

The NDC presidential candidate called for peace among political actors, noting that politicians contesting for various offices today could find themselves seeking support from the same political environment in the future.

“Some of them will be campaigning for presidency tomorrow. They will be campaigning for other offices tomorrow. Let’s have peace,” he said.

Obi also recalled his tenure as governor of Anambra State, saying opposition politicians were allowed to campaign in the state even when they were supporting candidates against his political interests. He used the experience to underscore his call for greater political tolerance ahead of the 2027 elections.
