Arokodare Speaks On Super Eagles Starting Spot, Leaves Final Call To Chelle
Tolu Arokodare has left the decision over whether he starts Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Madagascar to Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the Ajax forward is among the attacking options available to Chelle ahead of Friday’s Group L encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Arokodare’s potential involvement comes after Victor Osimhen was ruled out of the September qualifiers due to an injury sustained during a club match earlier this month. Osimhen’s absence leaves Chelle with several options, including Taiwo Awoniyi, who was called up as his replacement, Akor Adams and first-time invitee George Ilenikhena.
The Super Eagles will face Madagascar in Uyo before travelling to Guinea-Bissau for their second qualifying fixture on September 29.
Chelle could also decide to deploy two strikers, having previously used Osimhen and Adams together during the 2025 AFCON, with Ademola Lookman operating in a creative position.
Asked whether his recent club form should earn him a starting role, Arokodare said the final decision rests with the coach and would depend on the tactical approach selected for the match.
The 25-year-old explained that every player who earns the coach’s confidence should be given the opportunity to start, stressing that neither he nor his teammates determine the starting lineup.
Arokodare has earned 10 international caps since making his Nigeria debut in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, although he has started only one match for the national team.
His recent club performances have strengthened his case for increased playing time. The striker, who is on loan at Ajax from Wolverhampton Wanderers, scored shortly after coming on as a substitute in Ajax’s 2-2 draw against Excelsior last weekend.
However, Arokodare has also acknowledged that he is still working his way back to full fitness after recently recovering from a fever. He said the match against Excelsior made him realise that he was not yet completely fit and still felt some weakness.
Nigeria are in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania, with the Super Eagles seeking to secure qualification from the group.
