He’s The Number One – Ikpeba Makes Case For Nwabali Over Maduka Okoye

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has backed Stanley Nwabali to remain the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Maduka Okoye.

Ikpeba made the assessment while reacting to Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.

The former forward praised Nwabali for his composure and crucial saves after Madagascar took an early lead. He noted that the goalkeeper’s interventions helped Nigeria remain in the contest and eventually complete the comeback.

George Ilenikhena and Moses Simon scored for Nigeria as Eric Chelle’s side overturned Madagascar’s advantage to begin their qualification campaign with three points.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Ikpeba believes Nwabali has consistently taken his opportunities with the national team and has established himself as the leading option in goal.

“Credit to Nwabali; he’s the number one goalkeeper for the national team. In my opinion, he’s better than Maduka. People at home might disagree, but he’s the number one goalkeeper for the national team,” Ikpeba said.

He also highlighted the goalkeeper’s determination during the match, particularly when he made important interventions to prevent Madagascar from extending their lead.

Ikpeba argued that Nwabali’s saves were significant because another Madagascar goal could have changed the outcome of the encounter.

He suggested that had Nigeria conceded again at that stage, the match could have ended in a draw or even a defeat for the Super Eagles.

The victory handed Nigeria three points from their opening Group C qualifier and gave Chelle’s team a winning start to their 2027 AFCON campaign.

Ikpeba’s comments have consequently added to the ongoing discussion over the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping position and the competition between Nwabali and Okoye.
