We Keep Working – Ilenikhena Reacts After Scoring On Super Eagles Debut

George Ilenikhena has expressed his delight after making a memorable debut for the Super Eagles in Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.

The Al-Ittihad forward was handed a starting role by head coach Eric Chelle in Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Ilenikhena rewarded the coach’s confidence by getting on the scoresheet as Nigeria recovered from conceding the opening goal to secure all three points.

The 20-year-old later took to Instagram to celebrate his first appearance for the senior national team, describing the moment as a proud achievement.

“Proud to have made my debut with the national team. We keep working,” Ilenikhena wrote.

The goal also continued the striker’s impressive start to the 2026/27 season. He has registered seven goals and two assists in 10 appearances for club and country.

His latest strike proved important as Nigeria began their qualification campaign with a victory and moved level with Guinea-Bissau at the top of Group L.

Nigeria currently sit second on goal difference after Guinea-Bissau recorded a 2-0 away victory over Tanzania in their opening fixture.

The Super Eagles will face Guinea-Bissau in their next qualifier on Tuesday, September 29, in Bissau, with another positive result crucial to their qualification campaign.

Tanzania’s status as one of the co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON, alongside Kenya and Uganda, means they already have a place at the tournament. Consequently, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar will be competing for the available qualification spot in Group L.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Ilenikhena will be hoping his impressive debut provides the foundation for a productive international career as Nigeria continue their AFCON qualifying campaign.
