Shock Move: Ireland Turn To Outfield Player As Goalkeeper Bazunu Pulls Out

The Republic of Ireland could be forced to use defender Jimmy Dunne as an emergency goalkeeper after Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the team’s Nations League fixture against Israel.

Bazunu informed the Ireland squad that he would not participate in the match and later confirmed his decision in a statement, explaining that it was based on his personal beliefs.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Bazunu said representing Ireland remained extremely important to him but that he could not take part in the fixtures against Israel.

“Representing my country means everything to me,” the goalkeeper said.

He explained that his decision was influenced by his belief that the killing of innocent people was wrong, adding that his position was not directed at Israeli people or the Jewish community.

Bazunu’s withdrawal has created a goalkeeping dilemma for Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson. The squad had originally included Caoimhin Kelleher, Max O’Leary and Bazunu as the three goalkeepers for the international window.

Following Bazunu’s withdrawal, defender Jimmy Dunne was registered as an emergency goalkeeping option, potentially leaving him to deputise in goal if required.

Dunne, who plays for Queens Park Rangers, has primarily featured in his regular position in defence but could now be called upon to fill the unusual role if Ireland’s other goalkeeping options become unavailable.

Bazunu’s decision also prompted lengthy discussions within the Ireland camp, with the team’s scheduled press conference and training session reportedly delayed.

The Football Association of Ireland subsequently confirmed that the squad had voted by a significant majority to play the fixture against Israel, although the exact result of the vote was not disclosed.

Ireland are scheduled to face Israel at the Nagyerdei Stadium in Debrecen, Hungary, with kick-off set for 7:45pm.

Bazunu is also expected to miss Ireland’s second Nations League meeting with Israel on October 4 in Bačka Topola, Serbia. The return fixture is scheduled to be played behind closed doors.
