2025 Budget: Senate Sets New Deadline For Capital Projects

The Senate has approved an extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the decision was reached on Tuesday after senators considered and passed a bill seeking to amend the existing appropriation law.

The amendment was sponsored by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who said the extension was necessary because several projects captured under the 2025 capital budget had not been completed despite funds being released to Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government.

Bamidele explained that extending the deadline would provide additional time for the implementation and completion of capital projects that had already received funding but were yet to reach completion.

The Senate considered the bill clause by clause before approving the new deadline of December 31, 2026.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has also approved an extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget to December 31, 2026.

The House approved the extension following a motion presented by its Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, who attributed delays in the execution of the capital budget to economic difficulties.

The latest decision gives government agencies additional time to implement ongoing capital projects under the 2025 Appropriation Act before the new deadline expires.
