Couple In Police Net Over Alleged Drugging And Robbery Of Bus Passengers
A Tanzanian couple suspected of operating a scheme targeting unsuspecting bus passengers by allegedly drugging them and stealing their valuables has been arrested in Mombasa, Kenya.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the arrests in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
The investigation reportedly began after a passenger travelling on a Dreamline bus from Nairobi to Mombasa on September 18 became unconscious during the journey. According to investigators, the passenger had been seated beside a man who allegedly drugged him.
The passenger reportedly regained consciousness at Tudor Sub-County Hospital in Mombasa, where he discovered that his bag and several personal belongings were missing.
Following a complaint, detectives attached to Makupa Police Station launched an investigation and traced forensic leads that reportedly took them to the Magongo area.
The operation led to the arrest of 52-year-old Pius Paskale Frugenze and his 47-year-old wife, Redempta Revelian Kuleta, both of whom are Tanzanian nationals.
Investigators subsequently searched the couple’s residence and reportedly recovered an HP laptop and an iPhone 17 Pro Max belonging to the complainant. The recovery was described as a major breakthrough in the investigation.
Police also said they found several other items suspected to have been stolen, including assorted mobile phones, 20 phone chargers, 10 wristwatches, 20 wallets and various pieces of clothing.
Substances suspected by investigators to be stupefying drugs were also reportedly recovered from the residence.
The suspects remain in police custody as investigations and processing continue ahead of their expected arraignment. The recovered items have been retained by the authorities as exhibits as the case progresses.
