Why We Beat Nigeria 3-0 – Guinea-Bissau Coach Breaks Silence

Guinea-Bissau head coach Emiliano Té has attributed his team’s 3-0 victory over Nigeria’s Super Eagles to their ability to adjust their tactical approach according to the strengths and style of each opponent in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the Djurtus recorded their second consecutive victory in Group L on Tuesday after defeating the Super Eagles at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau.

Franculino Djú opened the scoring for the hosts before Mama Baldé doubled their advantage. Álvaro Djaló then completed the emphatic victory in stoppage time, handing Nigeria their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.

Guinea-Bissau had previously defeated Tanzania 2-0 in their opening fixture, while Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar.

Speaking during his post-match press conference, Té explained that his players’ tactical awareness and willingness to adapt played an important role in overcoming Nigeria.

The coach stressed that every match presents different challenges and requires a specific approach, adding that his players must remain focused on creating scoring opportunities and improving their performance regardless of the opposition.

Té said the victory was an important step in Guinea-Bissau’s qualification campaign but acknowledged that the team has not yet secured a place at the 2027 AFCON.

He described the qualification process as an ongoing journey and said the victory over Nigeria demonstrated that his team was making progress and would continue working towards its objective in the remaining matches.

The result leaves Guinea-Bissau with six points from two matches and strengthens their position in Group L, while Nigeria have three points from their opening two games.

Tanzania, one of the co-hosts of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, already have an automatic place in the tournament, meaning the remaining teams in the group are competing for the available qualification position.
