Shock Revelation: Amaechi Opens Up On His Unusual Exit From Buhari’s Cabinet

Published

Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed that he “technically resigned” from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration before eventually leaving the government.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Amaechi made the disclosure during an interview with AIT, explaining that he significantly reduced his attendance at the Ministry of Transportation after receiving Buhari’s approval to pursue a university programme.

Amaechi said he personally approached the former president to seek permission to return to university, a request Buhari reportedly approved. Following the approval, he arranged his schedule in a way that allowed him to stay away from the ministry on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, while reporting for official duties only on Wednesdays.

He described the arrangement as amounting to a “technical resignation” from government because of his limited presence at the ministry.

Amaechi said, “The next day, I went back to Mr President and asked, ‘Can I go to the university?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ Then I applied. In the application, I said I wouldn’t be in the office Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; that’s technically resigning from the government. The only day I came to the office was Wednesdays.”

Buhari appointed Amaechi as Minister of Transportation in November 2015, a position he held until May 2022. He subsequently resigned from the Federal Executive Council in May 2022 to pursue his ambition of contesting the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary election.

His latest revelation provides additional insight into his final period as a member of Buhari’s cabinet and the circumstances surrounding his reduced presence in the ministry before his eventual resignation.
