Mohbad’s D3ath: IGP Approves Fresh Police Investigation Into Singer’s Passing

Published

The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has disclosed that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu approved its petition seeking a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the development was disclosed by the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026. The lawyer said the police re-investigation remains ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a separate suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Ogungbe said the Aloba family submitted its petition to the Inspector-General of Police on April 14, 2026, and that it was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7. According to him, the petition raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and requested a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

The lawyer explained that the petition was subsequently approved by the IGP and forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action. He added that the family was later informed that the matter had been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.

Ogungbe said a representative of the family had already been invited by the new investigative team and had engaged with the officers handling the case. He added that the family had continued to follow up on the investigation and remained involved in the process.

The clarification came after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25, 2026. The suit, brought by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, sought to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death. The court dismissed the case after finding that the foundation had not provided sufficient evidence to establish its claims about shortcomings in the earlier investigation.

Ogungbe stressed that the court case was separate from the petition submitted by the Aloba family and was neither instituted by the family nor filed with its authority or consent. He therefore urged the public not to interpret the dismissal of the suit as an end to the separate police investigation arising from the family’s petition.

The family said it would continue cooperating with investigators by providing relevant information, documents, witnesses and other materials that could assist the authorities in establishing the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death. It also called on the police to handle the process with diligence, independence and professionalism while examining all relevant persons and circumstances.

The Aloba family further maintained that it was not seeking to prejudge the outcome of the investigation or engage in trial by media, but wanted a credible, comprehensive and transparent process capable of establishing the facts surrounding the singer’s death.
