Backlash Erupts As Cristiano Ronaldo’s Sister Takes Aim At Portugal Fans And Media

Cristiano Ronaldo’s elder sister, Elma Aveiro, has sparked backlash after defending her brother and criticising Portuguese fans, the national media and aspects of the country’s football structure following his departure from the Portugal camp.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Aveiro shared a message from a supporter on Instagram that argued Ronaldo deserved greater respect and criticised the organisation surrounding the national team as well as Portuguese football journalism. She endorsed the message with the caption, “Everything was said on here.”

The post also accused some Portuguese supporters of being envious, disdainful and ignorant, while claiming that the country’s football had been mediocre before Ronaldo’s emergence. The remarks subsequently drew criticism from fans and pundits who argued that the comments unfairly generalised about supporters who have backed Ronaldo throughout his international career.

Ronaldo’s decision to leave the national team camp came amid reported tension surrounding his role under new head coach Jorge Jesus. The forward was an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday, marking the first time in 18 years that he had remained on the bench for an entire match while part of the national squad.

Ronaldo later confirmed his departure in a statement shared on Instagram, explaining that the decision followed a national team press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would eventually explain the reasons behind his decision to leave the camp, while wishing Portugal and his teammates success in their remaining fixtures.

Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark on Thursday before meeting Norway again on Sunday as the international break continues.

Before his omission against Norway, Ronaldo had featured for 67 minutes in Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Wales, although one of his goals was disallowed.

Aveiro’s comments have now added another layer to the controversy surrounding Ronaldo’s departure, with the reaction continuing to generate debate among Portuguese football supporters and observers.
