We Need Consistency — Troost-Ekong Demands Major Changes For Super Eagles
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has called for greater consistency, stability and a stronger organisational structure within the Nigeria national team, insisting that the country must do more to maximise its abundant football talent.
The defender made the call as Nigeria continues to navigate a difficult period, having missed the last two FIFA World Cup tournaments and endured a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Super Eagles began their qualifying campaign with a narrow 2-1 victory over Madagascar before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second match.
Speaking on the team’s situation, Troost-Ekong stressed that improvement must begin from the Nigeria Football Federation through the coaching staff and players.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the former Watford defender believes consistency from the top level of football administration to the playing squad is crucial if Nigeria is to compete effectively on the international stage.
“We are at a point where we need to see some consistency, I think, from the top down; from the federation to the coach to this group of players,” Troost-Ekong said.
He acknowledged that Nigeria possesses an abundance of talented footballers but expressed concern about the uncertainty surrounding the preparation and organisation of the national team.
Troost-Ekong welcomed the decision to retain Eric Chelle on a long-term basis, noting that the coach’s involvement with the Olympic team could also help him understand and develop younger players coming through the ranks.
However, he warned that Nigeria cannot continue to depend solely on individual brilliance to achieve success.
The former Super Eagles captain said the team needs a clear structure and strong foundation capable of bringing out the best in its players and ensuring consistency in performances.
He also pointed to the increasing competitiveness of African football, stressing that Nigeria must improve its preparation as other national teams continue to raise their standards.
Troost-Ekong expressed optimism that greater stability under Chelle could help the Super Eagles regain their consistency and approach future qualifiers with a stronger sense of purpose.
He urged the relevant stakeholders to take the team’s challenges seriously and establish the structures needed to give Nigeria the best possible chance of returning to the top of African and international football.
