Ronaldo Gets Major Backing From Portugal Amid Dispute With Jorge Jesus
Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença has reaffirmed Cristiano Ronaldo’s place in the national team despite the recent disagreement between the veteran forward and head coach Jorge Jesus.
The federation chief described Ronaldo as a crucial figure in Portuguese football and insisted that the 41-year-old will remain part of the squad whenever he is fit and available for selection.
The controversy emerged after Ronaldo reportedly left Portugal’s training camp following comments made by Jesus during a press conference ahead of the UEFA Nations League encounter against Denmark.
According to Proença, however, the situation was merely a misunderstanding that should be resolved internally, with the federation now having sufficient time to address the matter following the completion of Portugal’s opening four Nations League fixtures.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Proença praised Ronaldo’s contribution to the national team, describing him as one of the greatest players in football history and an important symbol of Portuguese identity.
He stressed that Ronaldo’s continued involvement with the national team is justified by his exceptional ability and longstanding commitment to Portugal.
Proença also noted that Ronaldo could have ended his international career after the World Cup but chose to continue because of his strong attachment to the national team and the Portuguese people.
The federation president further emphasised that Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s legacy and will continue to be available whenever the coach considers him ready to play.
The development has also received support from Portuguese Minister of Economy Manuel Castro Almeida, who described Ronaldo as one of the country’s most recognisable figures and backed his continued presence in the national team.
Almeida highlighted Ronaldo’s enormous influence on Portugal’s international image, noting that the football star has played a significant role in promoting the country globally.
Meanwhile, Portugal have enjoyed a strong start under Jesus, winning all four of their matches, with their latest victory coming in a 2-1 triumph over Norway.
The federation’s latest comments are expected to ease concerns surrounding Ronaldo’s future with the national team, although attention will remain on how the superstar and Jesus resolve their reported differences ahead of Portugal’s next international assignment.
