Speed Darlington Sparks Outrage With Controversial Comments About Igbo Women

Published

Nigerian entertainer Speed Darlington has sparked controversy on social media after making derogatory comments about Igbo women and advising men against marrying women from the ethnic group.

In a video shared online, the entertainer questioned what he described as the value Igbo women bring to relationships compared with women from other ethnic groups.

“The worst thing you can do as a man is to end up with an Igbo girl/woman. Igbo girls have no value. What does Igbo women have that other girls don’t have?” he said.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Speed Darlington went further to caution men against marrying Igbo women, claiming that such relationships could hinder their progress in life.

The entertainer also made other disparaging remarks about Igbo women, questioning what he described as their attitude and confidence.

While making his argument, he also referenced the absence of an Igbo president in Nigeria, although he did not provide any evidence to establish a connection between the political issue and his claims about Igbo women.

His remarks have generated reactions online, with the comments drawing criticism over their broad generalisation of women from an ethnic group.

The controversy has once again triggered discussions about the impact of public figures’ comments on ethnic identity, relationships and social perceptions in Nigeria.
