Anthony Kila Asked To Step Aside As University Launches Probe Into Professorship Claim

The Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, has asked its Pro-Chancellor, Anthony Kila, to step aside from his responsibilities pending the conclusion of an investigation into questions surrounding his professorial status.

The university announced the decision in a statement issued on Tuesday, following a report that raised concerns about Kila’s claim to the title of professor and his use of the designation “Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development.”

According to Bush Radio Academy, the university said it took the step after taking note of a Premium Times investigation published on October 3, 2026, which questioned whether Kila had been awarded the rank of professor by a recognised academic institution.

MCIU said the decision was in line with its commitment to academic integrity, transparency and sound institutional governance.

The university explained that Kila would remain away from his Pro-Chancellor duties while the issues raised in the report are examined and the investigation is concluded.

It said the decision was necessary to protect the integrity of its governance processes and maintain the confidence of students, staff, parents, regulators and members of the public.

The university’s action follows an investigation which reportedly found no evidence that a recognised academic institution had conferred the professorial rank on Kila.

The investigation also examined Kila’s use of the title “Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development” and reportedly found no evidence supporting the claim.

MCIU said it would address the issues through its internal processes and reach its conclusions based on the outcome of the investigation.

Kila’s decision to step aside is therefore expected to remain in effect until the university completes its review and determines the appropriate next steps.
