Lookman Strikes As Atletico Madrid Sink Manchester United 2-0 After Leny Yoro’s Red Card
Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman came off the bench to score as Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on October 14, handing Michael Carrick his first European defeat of the campaign.
Atletico made a flying start to the encounter, taking the lead in the opening minute through Pablo Barrios, who converted a cross from Alex Baena to put the Spanish side ahead.
Manchester United struggled to find an equaliser despite creating several opportunities. Captain Bruno Fernandes came close to restoring parity but saw his effort strike the crossbar.
United’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a major setback when defender Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review for a challenge on Jonathan David, leaving the visitors with 10 men.
Atletico took advantage of their numerical superiority in the 79th minute when Lookman reacted quickest to a rebound from Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens to score and secure the home side’s victory.
Elsewhere, Arsenal continued their impressive Champions League form with a convincing 3-0 victory over Lille at the Emirates Stadium, extending their winning streak in the league phase to 14 matches.
Jurrien Timber broke the deadlock in the 64th minute before Ebere Eze doubled Arsenal’s advantage three minutes later. Bukayo Saka then completed the scoring in the 71st minute to seal another commanding performance for the Gunners.
Barcelona also recorded an emphatic away victory, recovering from an early setback to defeat Galatasaray 4-1 at Rams Park in Istanbul.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw by Viking in Norway despite Harry Kane scoring twice. The German side’s hopes of securing all three points were affected after Michael Olise received two yellow cards in quick succession, reducing Bayern to 10 players. Herman Haugen subsequently scored a late equaliser to deny the visitors victory.
Other results saw Sporting CP defeat Lens 2-0, Sabah overcome Slavia Prague by the same scoreline, RB Leipzig edge PSV 1-0, Villarreal beat Napoli 3-1 and Club Brugge secure a dramatic 4-3 victory over Inter Milan.
Attention now turns to the next round of fixtures, with Liverpool scheduled to face LASK, Real Madrid set to visit Roma and Manchester City preparing to host Paris Saint-Germain. Aston Villa will take on Fenerbahce, while Borussia Dortmund are due to travel to Bodo/Glimt.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Lookman’s decisive contribution highlighted the Nigerian forward’s growing influence on European football, while Atletico Madrid’s victory over Manchester United added another dramatic chapter to the Champions League campaign.
