Total Sweep! APC Wins Every Chairmanship And Councillorship Seat In Kogi Council Polls

Published

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in the Kogi State local government elections, winning all 21 chairmanship seats and 239 councillorship positions contested across the state.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) announced the results after completing the collation of votes at its headquarters in Lokoja.

Declaring the results, KOSIEC Chairman Mamman Nda-Eri said the ruling party won every chairmanship position across the state’s 21 local government areas, as well as all 239 councillorship seats in the state’s wards.

Nda-Eri described the elections as peaceful and credible, stating that the exercise was conducted in accordance with the commission’s electoral guidelines.

He also commended security agencies, election observers, journalists and voters for their conduct during the polls, which took place on Saturday.

The KOSIEC chairman explained that the election marked the completion of the 13 activities outlined by the commission for the 2026 local government polls, a process that began nearly a year ago.

He added that the successful candidates would receive their Certificates of Return in due course.

The election results come as the tenure of the current local government chairmen and councillors, who were sworn into office on October 23, 2024, approaches its end. Their two-year tenure is expected to expire this month in line with the state’s electoral law.

The APC’s performance means the party will control all 21 local government councils and every councillorship position in Kogi State following the conclusion of the electoral process.

Meanwhile, the local government election results come amid wider political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures raising concerns about their participation in the forthcoming polls.

In a related development, Adefolaseye Adebayo, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Representatives candidate for Surulere I Federal Constituency in Lagos State, has accused the APC of allegedly plotting to prevent her party from appearing on the ballot in the 2027 elections.

Adebayo, who also serves as the South-West Coordinator of the OK Movement, made the allegation in a video posted on her X account on Saturday.

She claimed that certain individuals were working to ensure the NDC would not be listed on the ballot for the Surulere I Federal Constituency contest.

The politician further alleged that a similar situation occurred during the 2023 general elections when she was a member of the Labour Party.

Adebayo called on the NDC leadership and Nigerians to pay attention to the allegation and take steps to prevent a recurrence. Her claims had not been independently established in the information provided.

The development highlights the political manoeuvring and concerns surrounding party participation as political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
