Ronaldo Punished By Portuguese Football Federation After International Camp Walkout
Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for leaving the national team’s camp in September.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the federation considered Ronaldo’s remorse, contributions to football and sporting achievements before determining the disciplinary measures against the 41-year-old forward.
Ronaldo reportedly left the squad after remaining an unused substitute during Portugal’s encounter with Norway and learning that he would not start against Denmark on October 1.
The Al-Nassr captain subsequently defended his decision in a lengthy statement, accusing Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word on two occasions and describing the situation as an “absolute breach of trust”.
Despite the punishment, Ronaldo’s availability for Portugal’s upcoming fixtures is not expected to be affected, as the suspension took effect on October 1, the day of the Denmark fixture. He has already served 19 days of the 30-day suspension.
Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark again in the Nations League on November 14 before travelling to Wales three days later.
In its disciplinary ruling, the FPF stated that it took into account Ronaldo’s expression of remorse, his contributions to the sport and his achievements throughout his career.
The disciplinary committee also noted that the forward submitted his curriculum vitae as part of his defence, outlining his awards and professional accomplishments.
Ronaldo accepted responsibility for leaving the national team’s camp and apologised to his teammates and supporters. He also acknowledged that his actions warranted punishment.
Meanwhile, Jesus has denied reaching any agreement with the forward but has indicated that a return to the national team remains possible.
FPF president Pedro Proença has also expressed the federation’s desire to welcome Ronaldo back once the disciplinary matter has been resolved. Speaking to Portuguese publication Record, Proença said there was a “strong desire” to see the national team captain return.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record men’s international goalscorer and appearance holder, with 146 goals in 234 appearances. He played a key role in the country’s triumph at Euro 2016 and its victories in two Nations League campaigns.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in December 2022 on a reported annual salary of £177 million and signed a contract extension in 2025.
The disciplinary action adds another chapter to the dispute surrounding Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp, with attention now turning to the resolution of the matter and his potential return to international duty.
