EndSARS Anniversary: Sowore Demands Arrest Of Those Behind Lekki Toll Gate Shootings
African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has renewed his demand for the investigation and prosecution of individuals found responsible for the shootings at the Lekki Toll Gate during the 2020 EndSARS protests.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Sowore made the call in a statement published on his X account to mark the sixth anniversary of the October 20 incident, questioning the progress made in securing justice for victims and their families.
“Where are the killers? Who ordered the shootings at Lekki Toll Gate? Who has been prosecuted? Why are the victims still waiting for justice?” Sowore wrote.
The activist called for a comprehensive investigation into the roles allegedly played by senior government officials and security personnel during the incident. He specifically mentioned Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside military and police commanders who were on duty at the time.
Sowore also urged authorities to investigate longstanding allegations surrounding the removal of surveillance cameras at the toll plaza before the shootings.
He maintained that the EndSARS movement went beyond demands for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), describing it as a broader campaign against police brutality, extortion and extrajudicial killings.
The AAC candidate further pledged that, if elected president in 2027, his administration would reopen the investigation into the Lekki incident, establish the chain of command and prosecute anyone found culpable, irrespective of political affiliation or official position.
His remarks have renewed attention to calls for accountability over the 2020 protests and the circumstances surrounding the shootings at the Lekki Toll Gate.
The demands come amid continuing public debate over the incident, the findings of previous investigations and the need for accountability for alleged abuses during the EndSARS protests.
