2027 Elections: APC Secretary Basiru Claims Northern Masses And Political Leaders Are Backing Tinubu

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has expressed confidence in the ruling party’s chances in the 2027 general elections, claiming that political leaders and ordinary citizens across Northern Nigeria are backing the party.

Basiru made the assertion during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday, describing the North as a strong support base for the APC ahead of the next presidential election.

He cited the reported support of prominent political figures, including former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, as well as the establishment of a campaign office known as Arewa for Asiwaju, as indications of growing support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Basiru said the campaign office was recently supported by influential figures from different sectors, including politics, business and industry, who had gathered to contribute to the initiative.

“The strength of the APC is in the Northern part of this country and you will see it by the grace of God when election comes in 2027,” he said.

Basiru further claimed that several prominent Northern political figures, including some previously associated with opposition parties, were now prepared to support the ruling party.

“Even some who are in the opposition party have changed, people like the former governor of Niger State Babangida Aliyu, now all of them are coming to join and work for the APC,” he stated.

He added that the party enjoyed support among influential Northern stakeholders as well as ordinary citizens, expressing optimism that this backing would translate into electoral success in 2027.

The APC national secretary also criticised opposition parties over their reactions to electoral defeats, urging political actors to recognise that winning and losing are both part of the democratic process.

Basiru referred to President Tinubu’s position on accepting electoral outcomes, arguing that politicians who celebrate victory must also be prepared to endure defeat.

“One of the things that our leader President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said is that anybody that wants to savour the joy of victory in a democracy must also be able to endure the pain when he loses,” he said.

He maintained that opposition parties should learn from electoral setbacks instead of allowing them to derail their participation in the democratic process.

Basiru noted that the APC had also experienced defeats in court cases and political contests but had accepted the outcomes, learned from them and moved forward.

“We have had our fair share of losses both in the court and in the political contests, and we have taken it, learn our lessons and moved on,” he added.

His remarks come as political parties and their supporters intensify preparations and build alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
