2027 Elections: INEC Completes 9 Of 14 Tasks, Moves To Resolve Disputes Over Candidates’ List

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has completed nine of the 14 activities outlined in its timetable for the 2027 general elections.

The disclosure was made on Wednesday by INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Dr Mohammed Haruna, who represented the commission’s chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, at a youth engagement programme in Abuja.

Haruna said the commission had recorded significant progress in implementing its electoral timetable, which covers key processes ranging from the announcement of election dates and political party primaries to the publication of the voters’ register and candidates’ lists.

According to Bush Radio Academy, one of the activities already completed is the publication of candidates nominated by political parties to contest various elective positions ahead of the 2027 polls.

Haruna stressed the importance of the voters’ register, describing it as a critical document that would serve as the basis for accrediting eligible voters on election day.

He acknowledged, however, that the initial publication of candidates’ names had generated complaints from some political parties over alleged omissions and discrepancies in the list.

The INEC commissioner said the commission had invited the affected parties to submit formal petitions detailing their concerns and was working to address the complaints before finalising the candidates’ list.

He assured political parties that the issues raised would be considered as part of the commission’s efforts to ensure a credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Haruna also disclosed that INEC had increased the frequency of its meetings as the elections approached. The meetings, he explained, were intended to review preparations, assess progress and make necessary decisions to ensure the smooth implementation of the electoral timetable.

With nine of the 14 scheduled activities completed, the commission is continuing work on the remaining tasks as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
