Outrage In Akure As Ponmo Seller Is Arrested Over Discovery Of Human Waste At Processing Centre
A ponmo seller in Akure, Ondo State, has been arrested and is expected to face prosecution following the discovery of buckets containing human feces at a facility where cowhide is processed for sale to consumers.
The disturbing discovery was reportedly made by an environmental sanitation inspection team during an inspection of the processing centre located on Igboliki Street in Akure, the state capital.
A video circulating on social media showed the chairman of Akure South Local Government Area at the facility, where two buckets containing what appeared to be human waste were discovered.
Following the discovery, the local government chairman reportedly ordered the arrest of the ponmo seller and directed that the processing centre be sealed.
The incident has sparked concerns about hygiene standards and food safety, particularly regarding the handling and processing of ponmo supplied to markets and consumed by residents.
The discovery has also raised questions about the conditions under which cowhide products are processed before reaching consumers, with calls for closer monitoring of food-processing facilities to prevent potential public health risks.
