Bishop Matthew Kukah, from the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, delivered a keynote speech at the 60th call to bar anniversary celebration of legal icon Aare Afe Babalola in Ado Ekiti. In his address on Monday, the bishop expressed his view that Nigeria experienced its worst phase of corruption during the previous administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari. CoNTINUE READING
While acknowledging that corruption did not originate with Buhari’s administration, Kukah argued that it was exacerbated both morally and financially under his leadership. He pointed to the series of articles by his friend, Femi Falana, highlighting the extent of corruption during that time.
“We have seen the worst phase of corruption in Nigeria. Femi Falana, my friend here, will speak about that because he has published a series of articles talking about what happened under the Buhari administration,” Kukah remarked. “They were not the ones who caused corruption, but I think in the last administration, we saw the ugliest phase of corruption, whether in moral terms, financial terms, and other terms.”
Kukah further expressed concern about Nigeria’s current state, noting that the country’s sovereignty, as guaranteed by the constitution, is being shared with bandits and terrorists. He lamented that Nigeria is being held hostage by individuals who pose a threat to democracy and the nation itself.
The bishop also voiced his worry about the erosion of faith in the judiciary, describing it as a victim of the crisis that has affected various institutions in Nigeria. He emphasized that the country should not assume it has fully achieved democracy, but instead view it as an ongoing journey towards rebuilding Nigeria after the challenges left behind by the previous administration.
However, Bishop Kukah highlighted the need to move forward and rebuild the nation. He expressed optimism that Nigerians have left the “ugly past” behind them following the outcome of the 2023 general elections, indicating a fresh start in the country’s path towards progress.
