The human rights activist and politician, Aisha Yesufu, has criticised the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, accusing him of prioritising personal image over party unity and electoral strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Yesufu’s remarks came in response to Dickson’s appearance on Arise Television on Wednesday, where he spoke about the party’s recently concluded primaries and admitted that there were reports of irregularities during the exercise.

In a statement released on Thursday, the activist expressed displeasure with the former Bayelsa State governor’s comments, describing his approach as disappointing and counterproductive.

She said she remained committed to the party’s internal processes despite disagreements over how the primaries were conducted, stressing that she complied with party decisions even when they did not favour her camp.

According to her, she accepted the leadership’s decisions and worked to calm supporters who were dissatisfied with the outcome of the primaries.

Yesufu stated that she actively engaged her supporters in the FCT, encouraging them to remain calm even when they felt sidelined, noting that she had always participated in “ground-level politics” rather than waiting for political favours.

She further urged Dickson to review his televised interview, insisting that parts of it were troubling and gave the impression of insecurity and self-centred focus rather than party-building.

The activist argued that the interview should have been used to strengthen confidence in the party and its candidates, rather than shifting attention to internal disputes or personal concerns.

Yesufu also said the NDC should be focused on winning elections, not merely existing as a registered political platform, adding that registration alone should not be treated as an achievement.

She emphasised that the party’s existence should serve as a means to secure electoral victory in 2027, not an end in itself.

The activist also faulted the party leadership for not adequately addressing grievances from aspirants and supporters following the primaries, saying unity-building should have been the priority.

According to her, Dickson’s responsibility as leader should include calming tensions and rallying members toward a common goal, rather than deepening divisions.

She added that no one within the party was challenging his position as national leader, insisting that attention should instead be on strengthening the party for the upcoming elections.

Yesufu also accused him of deflecting responsibility when issues arise within party processes, arguing that leaders must take accountability for shortcomings.

She maintained that acknowledging mistakes would help the party grow and improve its internal structures.

Concluding her remarks, she urged political leaders to remain focused on national priorities and the broader goal of improving governance in Nigeria, rather than engaging in internal ego battles.
