During a forum with members of the Nigerian community in Russia on Friday evening in St. Petersburg, Sen. Shettima addressed numerous concerns expressed by the attendees. The VP confidently affirmed, “Be rest assured that in the next 9 to 12 months there will be a swift change in the fortunes of Nigeria. I’m talking with all sense of certainty and responsibility because I believe in the capacity and commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Tackling the pressing matter of Nigeria’s economy, Shettima shed light on the administration’s efforts to rejuvenate the country’s economic structure. He highlighted two critical industry projects — the completion of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex and the revival of the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) — that he said were at the heart of their economic transformation plans. He stated, “It’s going to be a game changer. Having a vibrant steel industry is a sine qua non for the industrial take-off of any nation. I can bet you, I can promise you that the President will bring Ajaokuta to a reality.”
Vice President Shettima also emphasized the significance of these projects to President Tinubu’s legacy. He declared, “Be rest assured that if there is one legacy that President Tinubu would bequeath to fellow Nigerians, Ajaokuta is one. I’ll come back to Russia, we are going to drive this process, and my leader, my boss and principal – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is irrevocably committed to Ajaokuta and to ALSCON.”
The VP further expressed his confidence in Nigeria’s vast potential for transformation. He noted that the Tinubu administration planned to leverage the country’s abundant human and material resources to spur sustainable development and growth.
He revealed a targeted approach to digital skill training, stating, “Our target is to train 1,000,000 Nigerians on digital skills.” Sen. Shettima is of the strong opinion that Nigeria’s youthful population could effectively bridge the anticipated global talent deficit by 2035.
Reflecting on President Tinubu’s track record as the Governor of Lagos State, the VP expressed belief in his capacity to steer Nigeria towards an era of remarkable transformation. He commended the Nigerian community in Russia for their maturity and applauded the achievements of the Nigerian Ambassador to Russia, Amb Shehu Abdullahi.
The forum was attended by various dignitaries including Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mr Gabriel Aduda, and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Mrs Mary Ogbe. Representatives of the Nigerian community expressed appreciation for the Tinubu administration’s proactive engagement to improve Nigeria-Russia relations.
