Former President Donald Trump was charged by Special Counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday, August 1, in connection with his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Smith accused the 77-year-old former president of engaging in unlawful measures to invalidate valid votes and undermine the election results, all in a desperate attempt to retain power after losing to Joe Biden. According to the prosecution led by Smith, Trump repeatedly made baseless claims of election fraud to create an illusion of legitimacy for his false assertions. This widespread dissemination of misinformation allegedly aimed to sow mistrust and anger among the public and erode faith in the election administration.

The indictment marks the second legal action taken by Smith against Trump. Currently, Trump is already facing 40 federal counts related to allegations of mishandling national security documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

A grand jury investigating the former president convened for several hours at the federal courthouse in Washington, DC on Tuesday, before the indictment was issued.
