The 40-year-old man had disappeared on Saturday afternoon following a suspected crocodile attack near the Annan River Bridge in Far North Queensland.

“While a formal identification is still pending, it is believed the remains are those of the missing 40-year-old from New South Wales,” stated Queensland police. “Further tests will be conducted to confirm the identity.”

The search and rescue operation for the missing man has been suspended.

On Monday, local media reported that a large crocodile, thought to be responsible for the fatal attack, was “humanely euthanised.” The crocodile, nearly five meters long, was located approximately four kilometers from where the man went missing and was identified by unique markings on its snout.

Authorities noted that the crocodile was likely several decades old. The man had been fishing at a popular spot with his wife and children.

Additionally, there are ongoing investigations into reports that people may have been feeding crocodiles near the scene. Feeding crocodiles is illegal and can result in fines of about AUD $6,452 (USD $4,188).

Australia typically reports two fatal crocodile attacks annually. The most recent incident before this was the death of a 12-year-old girl in the Northern Territory in July.
