Northern Senators Warn President Tinubu Against Military Invasion Of Niger Republic

The situation arises after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) gave Niger a week’s ultimatum to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum or face harsher sanctions.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Suleiman Kawu, the spokesman of the Northern Senators, urged Tinubu to exhaust all diplomatic avenues in resolving the crisis in Niger Republic.

The Forum emphasized that deploying Nigerian troops to the neighboring country could have negative consequences for seven northern states sharing borders with Niger Republic.

The northern senators emphasized the need for political and diplomatic efforts to restore democratic governance in Niger Republic.

They expressed concern that military force should only be considered after all other peaceful means have been exhausted to avoid civilian casualties and potential repercussions on the neighboring northern states.

The Forum’s leadership, under Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP-Bauchi), condemned the upstaging of Niger’s democratically elected government and acknowledged President Tinubu’s efforts, along with ECOWAS leaders, to address the situation in Niger Republic.

The senators called on their colleagues to exercise due diligence in invoking constitutional provisions before resorting to military actions.
