According to sources cited by AFP, the primary objective of the meeting was to apprise ECOWAS leaders about the most suitable approaches for activating and deploying the standby force.

Despite this postponement, ECOWAS has refrained from disclosing specific details regarding the force or a timeline for its implementation. The leaders have reiterated their commitment to pursuing a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the situation.

A spokesperson for ECOWAS announced on Friday that efforts are underway to reschedule the military chiefs’ meeting for the coming week.

As a brief recap, the military junta in Niger had ousted President Mohamed Bazoum from office, subsequently instituting a governance framework and appointing a civilian Prime Minister.
