Edo State Governor Obaseki Allegedly Redeploys Permanent Secretary Amidst Deputy Governor’s Rift

Amidst reported tensions between Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, Governor Obaseki has purportedly ordered the reassignment of the Permanent Secretary of the State Sports Commission, Mrs. Sabina Chikere. Chikere, who is connected by marriage to the deputy governor, was previously the General Coordinator of Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin. Reports have suggested friction between Obaseki and Shaibu, with the deputy governor reportedly pursuing his own gubernatorial ambitions. Shaibu had sought a court order to prevent Obaseki, along with other state officials, from initiating an alleged impeachment process against him. Although the governor has refuted the claim, their relationship has deteriorated.

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has also dismissed rumors regarding an impending impeachment of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu as baseless.

A source familiar with the situation confirmed the redeployment of Mrs. Chikere. The source indicated that this move might be linked to the reported differences between Governor Obaseki and his deputy.

Allegedly, Mrs. Chikere’s rise to the position of Permanent Secretary was perceived to have been influenced by the deputy governor, despite her not being a core civil servant in Edo State.
