The legislators have also called on the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Police Affairs to collaborate with the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE).

to promptly assess the value of federally-owned barracks across the country and announce their availability for public purchase.

This resolution was reached following the adoption of a motion raised by Hon. Murphy Omoruyi, addressing the urgent need to address the dire living conditions of Nigerian Police Force (NPF) officers.

Omoruyi recalled that in September 2020, the National Assembly passed the Police Reform Bill 2020, which was subsequently signed into law by former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. One of the key objectives of the law was to improve the living conditions of the nation’s police officers.

The legislator highlighted the persistent issue of inadequate and undignified housing for police officers, which has endured despite previous attempts to address it.

Omoruyi pointed out that between 2019 and 2022, the federal government had spent over N5 billion on renovating barracks.

However, these efforts have not adequately met the basic needs of the officers, given the current state of disrepair and lack of maintenance in the barracks.
