Former Governor of River State, Chibuike Amaechi, has expressed his view that contemporary politicians in Nigeria predominantly rely on ethnicity as a means to attain political success.

Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation, contends that the nation is still in search of true national leaders.

Speaking as the guest speaker at the 2023 TheNiche Annual Lecture, themed “Why We Stride and Slip: Leadership, Nationalism, and the Nigerian Condition,” held in Lagos on Thursday, Amaechi emphasized that the majority of politicians openly exhibit their ethnic affiliations and prioritize their ethnic groups when seeking political office.

He remarked, “Most times, we elect those who openly show that they are ethnic leaders and they are there for their ethnic group.”

Amaechi noted that Nigerian political elites frequently resort to stirring ethnic debates within their ethnic bases when they encounter difficulties in gaining advantages in their quest for national-level power and privileges.

Amaechi made a distinction by acknowledging former President Olusegun Obasanjo as one of the few figures who approached true nationalism, while characterizing the rest as ethnic leaders.

He defined a genuinely exceptional national leader as someone capable of unifying the entire nation under a common national identity, guided by a clear vision and sense of purpose.

Such a leader, in Amaechi’s view, can transcend limitations and lead the nation and its people to new heights of national greatness, shared aspirations, pride, achievements, and prosperity.
