Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, announced the commencement of the campaign, revealing plans to immunize over 1,550,000 girls aged 9 to 14 over the five-day initiative.

Kano is part of the first phase in which 16 Nigerian states will participate, aiming to vaccinate 7.7 million girls aged 9-14 years.

Commissioner Yusuf highlighted the vaccine’s high efficacy against HPV types 16 and 18, responsible for about 70 percent of cervical cancer cases.

Cervical cancer ranks as the third most prevalent cancer in Nigeria and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women aged 15 to 44.

Data from 2020 indicated 12,000 cases and 8,000 deaths from cervical cancer in the country.
