Former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, who is now serving as the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reportedly spent N900 million on the renovation of the governor’s residence between April and June 2023, according to the Rivers State budget performance report for the second quarter. The handover to his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, took place on May 29.
In addition to the renovation expenses, records from the same quarter revealed that the office of the governor, under the leadership of Fubara, spent a staggering N2.7 billion on the purchase of computer printers. Another significant expenditure of N32 billion was allocated to an item listed as “special projects.”
Details from the budget performance report indicate that the purchase of computer printers over the three months amounted to N2,751,0399,898.84, as documented on Page 35. Simultaneously, the rehabilitation of the Governor’s Residence consumed N900,000,000, as indicated on Page 50.
Further scrutiny of the budget report showed that within the same period, the office of the governor expended a security vote of N27,402,086,068.16, as recorded on Page 50.

The political relationship between Wike, now affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Abuja, and his successor Fubara soured in recent weeks, leading to a crisis in the state, including impeachment proceedings initiated by the State House of Assembly.
Amidst the crisis, President Bola Tinubu intervened in an attempt to resolve the political turmoil, and Fubara later apologized to the people of the state for the upheaval. However, tensions persisted, with Wike accusing Fubara of being an ingrate and creating unnecessary crises in the state.
