Kogi State Assembly Passes Bill Extending Retirement Age For Parliamentary Staff

One of the significant amendments involves extending the retirement age for parliamentary staff from 60 to 65 years or from 35 to 40 years in service, irrespective of the civil service law provisions.

Section three of the amendment also explicitly stipulates that a potential Secretary of the Commission must be a substantive director on Grade Level 16, attaining the status of a permanent secretary upon appointment.

Furthermore, the chairman of the commission and its members are now mandated to hold office for five years, with the possibility of reappointment for an additional five years (a second term), subject to the Kogi State House of Assembly’s ratification.

During the lead debate, Hon. Sulyman Abdulrasaq, the majority leader representing Okene Town state constituency, argued that extending the service years would enhance staff performance, boost morale, and facilitate the transfer of experience to younger staff.

Other lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Hon. Paul Enema and Hon. Ujah Aliwo Anthony representing Olamaboro constituency, contributed to the discussions on the amendments.
