The governor, who has been the subject of speculation regarding his health since returning from a three-month medical leave in Germany, has been residing in an undisclosed private residence in Ibadan, Oyo State. Ademola-Olateju emphasized that Governor Akeredolu is not incapacitated, underscoring that he continues to perform his official duties, albeit abstaining from social events.
While the commissioner acknowledged the governor’s health challenges, she maintained that he remains actively engaged in governance. According to her, Governor Akeredolu has been attending to official matters, approving memos, and staying in regular contact with cabinet members.
Responding to inquiries about why the governor has not considered resignation, Ademola-Olateju drew a distinction between Akeredolu’s current situation and his past call for the resignation of President Umaru Yar’Adua when he served as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). She emphasized that the governor’s health does not warrant resignation, emphasizing his non-incapacitated status. CONTINUE READING
Regarding the provisions of Section 189 (1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution, which allows the executive council to declare a governor incapable, the commissioner dismissed any such plans, reiterating that Governor Akeredolu is not incapacitated, and there is no need for an evaluation of his health.
In response to questions about the governor’s extended stay in Ibadan, Ademola-Olateju clarified that Akeredolu is still recuperating from a severe illness. While affirming the governor’s intact cognitive and affective skills, she acknowledged a visible reduction in his physical strength, attributing it to the recovery process.
Without delving into specifics, the commissioner described the governor’s ailment as a somatic problem, emphasizing that after the age of 40, nobody is entirely well. Meanwhile, she attributed the heightened political tension in the state to the ambitions of the deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, pointing to it as a contributing factor to the current political climate in Ondo State.
