The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has leveled accusations against Governor Ahmed Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging extravagant spending. In a press release issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sayinnawal, on Saturday, the PDP claimed that the APC-led administration in the state was engaging in reckless management of public funds, particularly through the approval of significantly inflated contracts…..CONTINUE READING

The statement expressed concern over what it characterized as the alarming recklessness displayed by the APC government, citing the awarding of contracts without adhering to due process and established financial procedures. The PDP raised specific examples, such as the purportedly exorbitant cost of illuminating a few streets in Sokoto metropolis at N2 billion, despite the reuse of existing poles. Additionally, it criticized the allocation of N40 billion for the construction of urban streets in two neighborhoods, questioning the justification for such high expenses on roads less than two kilometers long.
The PDP deemed the spending of N292 million on redecorating three roundabouts in Sokoto as absurd, especially when private companies in the state had previously undertaken the same work. The party also expressed disbelief at the allocation of N1 billion for a new fleet of limousines for Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
The party called on the governor to reconsider the allocation of N800 million for the reconstruction of the Maiduguri Road by Eastern Bypass Road, a project covering barely two kilometers without requiring clearing or compensations.
In response, the state government, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Sambo Danchadi, dismissed the PDP’s allegations as shameless propaganda. Danchadi defended the spending, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to restoring the state’s former glory. He argued that quality work required financial investment and cited the Igbo saying, “better soup na money make am,” to justify the costs. Danchadi highlighted the APC administration’s achievements within its first 100 days, asserting that it had surpassed the PDP’s accomplishments during its eight years in power. He also pointed out the challenges posed by the exchange rate, stating that despite the disparities between the Naira and Dollar, the APC government had successfully met public expectations by rehabilitating numerous roads within Sokoto township and enhancing them with modern street lights.
