In a bid to tackle multi-dimensional poverty in the nation, Edu explained that the one and two-bedroom houses are intended to house IDPs in various states. The construction of each house, involving direct labor with the participation of the beneficiaries, is estimated to cost N3 million. The Tinubu administration has expressed a strong commitment to providing shelter for a minimum of five million displaced and vulnerable households in Nigeria.
Dr. Edu highlighted the recent approval of the humanitarian trust fund by the federal government, comprising a 30% contribution from the government and the remaining 70% from donor agencies and individuals. This funding mechanism is designed to support initiatives addressing the housing needs of IDPs.
Furthermore, the minister reported that a similar project for IDPs has already commenced in Benue. She disclosed that the groundbreaking for this project took place in Benue, and progress includes the clearance of approximately 10 hectares for the construction of 40 houses.
Edu emphasized the efficiency of the construction process, stating that the structures are easy to build. This approach is expected to expedite the provision of housing for IDPs across various regions of Nigeria, particularly in Borno, Zamfara, Adamawa, Yobe, and other areas that have been significantly affected.
