he Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) officially launched the Nigeria Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (NDP-SRAP 2023-2027) in Abuja on Wednesday. The comprehensive action plan, featuring five pillars—governance, ecosystem and technology, human capital development, cooperation and collaboration, and funding and sustainability—is projected to yield substantial benefits, including the creation of approximately 500,000 jobs and an impressive revenue generation exceeding N125 billion.
Concurrently, a capacity-building workshop on Data Privacy and Protection for Data Protection Officers was conducted, aligning with the commission’s commitment to enhancing expertise in the field. Dr. Vincent Olatunji, NDPC’s National Commissioner, emphasized the significance of the NDP-SRAP and the training program in achieving the commission’s mandate of establishing a robust data protection sector.
Dr. Olatunji highlighted the potential of the data protection sector to contribute significantly to job creation, citing the “Renewed Hope” agenda of the administration’s goal to generate two million jobs in the digital economy sector. He underscored the interconnected nature of the NDP-SRAP initiatives, encompassing job and wealth creation, human capital development, revenue generation, and foundational efforts for the digital economy. The roadmap aims to create a positive impact on Nigeria’s global reputation, cybersecurity, and international business growth.
The NDPC Commissioner stressed the inclusive nature of job opportunities within the data protection sector, encompassing diverse professions, with over 69 activities embedded in the five pillars of the NDP-SRAP.
Dr. Olatunji also addressed the need for a Data Protection and Certification body, expressing the commission’s consideration of endorsing such an entity. He highlighted the goal of developing homegrown solutions and certifications that rival global standards, aiming to alleviate the financial burden associated with foreign certifications.
Mr. Ivan Anya, Chairman Board of Trustees, Licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisations (LDPCOs), emphasized ongoing engagements to facilitate the implementation of the roadmap. With approximately 150 LDPCOs currently in existence, the goal is to foster opportunities for the development of Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem.
Dr. Ayodeji Oyewole, President of the Institute of Information Management (IM-Africa), lauded NDPC’s initiatives, recognizing their potential to strengthen the country’s data and information management landscape. He expressed optimism about the roadmap’s futuristic impact on the nation, ensuring sustainability and providing avenues for professional development.
The workshop witnessed the active participation of 150 data protection officers, marking a significant step in advancing the skills and capabilities of professionals in the field.
