The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has urged Governor Alex Otti to postpone the planned demolition of illegal structures in Umuahia capital city until after the Yuletide season. The party, in a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Chukwuemeka Nwokoro, acknowledged the state government’s right to sanitize the city’s structures but expressed concern that the timing could exacerbate the economic hardship already faced by the citizens.
APGA suggested that the demolition exercise be rescheduled to the first quarter of the following year, allowing affected individuals sufficient time to adjust. The party emphasized that while they support the government’s decision to remove illegal structures, carrying out the demolition during the Christmas season would inflict additional hardship on the people.
The statement read, “APGA, Abia State chapter hereby cautions Dr. Alex Otti-led government of Abia State not to add to sufferings of the teeming population of Abia citizens within this Christmas season.”
The party questioned the wisdom of the government’s decision to proceed with the demolition during a critical period when citizens are struggling with economic difficulties. APGA pointed out that many Abians depend on the businesses located within the affected areas for their livelihoods, and the demolition would have severe consequences on the affected families.
APGA urged the government to consider the potential impact of dislodging over 500 businesses during the Christmas season, emphasizing that it could lead to significant hardships and exacerbate the sufferings of many families. The party called for the immediate suspension of the planned demolition and suggested that it be rescheduled for the following year.
Furthermore, APGA advised the government to provide alternate markets for the affected traders before proceeding with the demolition. The party emphasized the importance of making these markets conducive for business transactions and highlighted the role of democracy in considering popular and genuine opinions within the political system.
In response, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, assured that the government would approach the exercise with a human face, prioritizing the well-being of the people. He emphasized the considerate nature of Otti’s administration while warning against any contravention of the law during the process.
