Inside Tinubu’s Meeting With Uzodimma, Zulum, Other Governors As Fresh Details Emerge

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced an immediate Federal Government–state initiative aimed at reducing transportation costs across the country through increased adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.

Tinubu disclosed this on Thursday after meeting with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), saying the governors had, “on their own initiative,” agreed to implement measures designed to pass fuel savings on to Nigerians.

According to the President, the governors have committed to taking immediate steps to reduce transportation costs within their respective states, with particular emphasis on the cost-saving benefits of CNG and electric vehicles.

Tinubu revealed that the Federal Government has so far converted more than 120,000 vehicles under the Presidential CNG Initiative and is preparing an additional 100,000 conversion kits.

He added that his administration would continue to expand CNG conversion centres and refuelling infrastructure across the country.

The President also highlighted investments being made through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, which is supporting more than 100 gas-related projects nationwide.

“These include 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations,” he said.

Tinubu noted that he commissioned four of the projects in May across Lagos, Abuja and Owerri. Among them was a 15-station CNG refuelling network in Lagos and an Abuja facility capable of servicing up to 1,000 cars and tricycles, as well as 50 trucks and buses daily.

The President further directed the establishment of 500 additional CNG refuelling stations, on top of an earlier directive for 500 stations, bringing the nationwide target to 1,000 stations.

Tinubu stressed that state governments have significant control over intra-state transportation, where commuters directly experience the impact of high fares. He therefore welcomed the governors’ decision to take action.

“Intra-state transport is where Nigerians feel the cost most directly, and it is where the states hold the levers. I am encouraged that our Governors are moving to bring these benefits closer to the people they serve,” Tinubu said.

The President also announced plans to immediately establish a joint Federal and State implementation committee to coordinate the rollout of the measures.

He emphasised the potential savings for motorists and commuters, noting that vehicles powered by CNG consume significantly less money on fuel compared with petrol-powered vehicles.

“A vehicle running on CNG spends 60 to 80 per cent less on fuel than one running on petrol. From October 1, our goal is that Nigerians begin to partake in those savings through lower transport fares. We have agreed that cheaper fuel should result in cheaper fares!” Tinubu said.
