Expressing their concerns over the government’s reluctance to address the workers’ demands, the labor movement issued a joint statement in Ilorin. The document was signed by key figures, including Comrade Murtala Saheed Olayinka, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Tunde Joseph, the state Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, and Comrade Saliu Oluwole, the state Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC).
Emphasizing that their request aligns with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) established between the Federal government and organized labor post the fuel subsidy removal, the statement urged the state government to adopt and implement a 40 percent peculiar allowance for workers in line with the provisions for federal employees.
The labor movement also pressed for the implementation of consequential adjustments for pensioners and additional allowances for workers in state-owned media houses. Notably, employees in these media houses had recently staged a two-day warning strike to advocate for improved welfare.
Additionally, the statement appealed to the state government to settle outstanding arrears for local government workers and address pending promotion arrears for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023 for all categories of state workers. The labor leaders emphasized the urgency of these measures to prevent potential industrial unrest.
