The NDLEA reported that its operatives conducted a raid on a residence in the Mushin area of Lagos on Thursday, December 21, leading to the apprehension of Selifat Cole (70 years old) and her son, Babajide Cole, along with 117.900kg of cannabis sativa.
The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday, highlighting that the arrests were made with the collaboration of the Nigerian Customs Service and other stakeholders.
Babafemi stated, “At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos, the NDLEA officers, in cooperation with the Nigeria Customs and other stakeholders, thwarted all attempts by drug syndicates to smuggle 7,500,000 pills of tramadol 225mg through the NAHCO import shed of the airport.” The consignment, seized on Friday, December 22, arrived on a Turkish airline with no clear country of manufacture or origin. It marked the first time such a shipment was seized on the airline’s flight and the first from Hamburg, Germany.
The specially designed tramadol pills, concealed in 100 large cartons weighing 7,150kg, were placed under surveillance upon arrival on December 11. Preliminary tests confirmed the tablets’ positive presence of tramadol hydrochloride.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation, NDLEA operatives in Lagos seized 258 cartons of codeine-based cough syrup and eight cartons of codeine tablets from two shops at the Trade Fair Complex in the Ojo area of Lagos on December 20. The spokesperson noted that the cartons contained 49,200 bottles of codeine syrup and 46,200 tablets of the same opioid.
Additional operations included the interception of a consignment of spare parts from Asaba, Delta state, bound for Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, India. NDLEA sniffer dogs identified cocaine measuring 200grams within the spare parts. In the Federal Capital Territory, NDLEA operatives intercepted a waybill consignment of 25,000 tramadol pills, while counterparts in Anambra arrested two suspects at the Onitsha head bridge.
Further, in joint operations with the military in Delta State, the NDLEA raided the residence of a drug kingpin, Chukwuma Eneriku, in Abbi town, recovering 353kg of cannabis. In Enugu, operatives seized 435.1kg of cannabis sativa from a warehouse at Trans Ekulu, Enugu East LGA.
In Edo State, five individuals dressed in NDLEA operational jackets were arrested for impersonating officers and conducting illegal operations. The suspects included Sebastine Asekiamhe, Raymond Otaru, Emmanuel Wisdom, Solomon Edogamhe, and Bonaventure Oghibui, with others managing to escape. Those arrested were found with a fabricated gun and a wooden-carved pistol, along with a bottle of codeine-based syrup.
