Recalling the pivotal moment, Alibaba described how he left university to inform his father of his decision, only to be met with a reaction that prompted him to leave home. His father, a dedicated academician who earned his PhD at the age of 86, was taken aback when Alibaba announced his desire to pursue comedy instead of a legal career.
Alibaba recounted, “I told him, I said, ‘Daddy, I came from school to tell you something.’ He said, ‘Okay, have you been rusticated?’ I said, ‘No. I’ve decided that I don’t want to read law. I want to do comedy.’”
The comedian’s father, seemingly disapproving, summoned Alibaba’s younger brother and another relative to address the situation. Alibaba’s uncle expressed strong disagreement, suggesting that Alibaba had chosen to be part of another family by forgoing a legal education. Tensions escalated, resulting in Alibaba’s decision to leave home.
Opening up about the strained relationship with his father, Alibaba shared, “I knew I couldn’t sleep in that house because my dad would beat me. So as my uncle was going out, I followed him to lock the burglary and I didn’t go back in. And my dad and I didn’t talk from 1988 – 1998. Ten years.”
Despite numerous attempts to reconcile during this period, Alibaba faced rejection when he reached out to his father. Undeterred, he channeled his determination into becoming a successful comedian, driven by the desire to prove his father wrong.
Reflecting on this challenging period, Alibaba emphasized the commitment and perseverance that fueled his journey to become a great comedian, transcending familial disagreements and societal expectations.
