According to a colleague who spoke to BUSHRADIOGIST, Odia had left the office around 4 pm on Sunday, and news of his death shocked those at the ITV premises later that night. The colleague revealed that the killing was a result of cult clashes around the Esigie area, off East Circular Road. Notably, the deceased’s brother had also been killed in a similar manner the previous year, and three others were reportedly shot on the day Odia lost his life.
Describing Odia as a jovial and hardworking individual, the colleague called on the police to investigate and apprehend the suspects involved. The source mentioned that Odia had plans to relocate from his residence at Upper Mission Extension and had recently taken an exam at Edo State Polytechnic in Usen.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, expressed condolences to the management and staff of ITV over Odia’s death. In a statement, NUJ urged security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to uncover the circumstances surrounding the journalist’s murder. The union extended heartfelt prayers for the repose of Odia’s soul and encouraged his family to find solace in the positive memories he leaves behind.
The NUJ statement called on journalists to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure accurate reporting of the tragic event. The Edo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chidiebube Nwabuzor, confirmed the killing but noted that details were limited at the time. He promised to provide more information after preliminary investigations on the following day.
