SaharaReporters gathered that the governor was under the care of State House doctors until his demise, as flying him abroad for treatment proved unfeasible.

“Akeredolu is dead; he died in Lagos,” disclosed the source. “They were searching for dialysis machines to be sent to his undisclosed location in Lagos last week.”

The late governor, aged 67, returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany. Recently, he took another leave following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Acting as Governor in Akeredolu’s absence, Aiyedatiwa has assumed the responsibilities of the office. Upon his return to Nigeria in September, Akeredolu attempted to govern from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, sparking public outcry.

On July 9, Akeredolu’s wife, Betty, announced the suspension of activities planned for her 70th birthday due to unforeseen circumstances related to her husband’s health.

“Hello Family and Friends. This is to inform you that all activities lined up to mark my 70th birthday are hereby suspended till further notice due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this development.”

“Nevertheless, be assured that I will be celebrated in style upon my return. Thank you for your understanding. I remain Arabinrin a.k.a Ada Owere I,” she tweeted.

In a January exclusive, SaharaReporters had revealed Akeredolu’s battle with leukemia, a blood cancer characterized by an abnormal increase in white blood cells.

Leukemia disrupts the production of red blood cells and platelets, essential for bodily health. It impairs the body’s ability to fight infections, with various types such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Treatment complexities vary, but symptoms may include weakness, bruising, fever, infections, bone pain, headaches, vomiting, seizures, weight loss, night sweats, shortness of breath, and swollen lymph nodes or organs.

The late governor’s courageous fight against leukemia has come to an end, leaving a void in Ondo State politics.
