Rotimi Akeredolu, aged 67, passed away, leading to a reshuffling of political dynamics in the Sunshine state. Although the state authorities had not officially confirmed the governor’s demise, an APC chieftain revealed ongoing efforts to facilitate Aiyedatiwa’s swearing-in as the new governor, as reported by The BUSHRADIOGIST.
Prior to this development, Aiyedatiwa had been holding the reins of governance amid a protracted political conflict with state lawmakers. Governor Akeredolu’s three-month medical leave in Germany stirred public concern, and upon his return to Nigeria, he chose to stay at his private residence in Ibadan, Oyo state. Attempts to govern remotely from Ibadan led to a power struggle, with some lawmakers advocating for Aiyedatiwa’s installation as the acting governor. This discord prompted discussions of impeaching the deputy governor, but the intervention of President Bola Tinubu resulted in an agreement to maintain the existing political status quo.
As Akeredolu’s health deteriorated in December, Tinubu again played a role in influencing the state assembly’s decision to have Aiyedatiwa sworn in as the acting governor. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu ultimately succumbed to leukemia at the age of 67, passing away at the state house hospital in Lagos. His return to Nigeria in September after a three-month sojourn in Germany was marked by health challenges that prevented him from resuming official duties, leading to his pursuit of treatment in Lagos.
The unfolding events in Ondo state underscore the complexities of political transitions and succession plans, shedding light on the interplay between health crises, power struggles, and the need for stable governance.
